History of "Europe Day"
On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, in order to get peaceful relations and economic and social advantages.
Some years later, in the EU Summit in Milan in 1985, it was decided that 9 May would be celebrated as "Europe Day".
On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, in order to get peaceful relations and economic and social advantages.
This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered to be
the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.
Some years later, in the EU Summit in Milan in 1985, it was decided that 9 May would be celebrated as "Europe Day".
Europe Day is the
occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its
citizens.
